Ian started the business from scratch at age 21. Ian had just finished an electrical apprenticeship and was looking for new opportunities. Typically, back then it was relatively easy to enter the insurance industry, so he took on a position with Capita Financial Group. Learning very quickly that his income was based on commission, and you were essentially working for yourself, he started literally knocking on doors and making cold calls to businesses asking if he could help them with their insurances.  

FloorInsure was established because Ian’s brother has always been retailing in carpet and flooring. Ian Jones Insurance’s market is primarily in carpet and flooring retailers across Australia and that was how it started. Ian decided not to stop there and so, started to market FloorInsure to the 1000’s of flooring contractors, flooring products suppliers, importers, distribution and logistics, specialized flooring for health, acoustic flooring, food and kitchen, flooring inspectors and just about any business who has a role in flooring. They are also the partner brokers for the Australasian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA). 

37 years later the business has grown organically with most clients coming from referrals. One thing that has changed is that Ian is less involved directly with clients on an ongoing basis. He is proud to say, “I have tremendous staff who look after everything, but I am still constantly involved in ensuring that very strict service standards are adhered to. My main role now is to create business and our Flooring Industry Program, FloorInsure, is a prime example of that.” Ian also has programs for Newsagencies, wine industry Grape Crop insurance, and has developed a strong reputation for difficult and hard to place insurances for risks that other brokers can’t place. 

Ian adds, “Our services cover the advice and provision of every class of insurance relevant to any particular flooring business we work for. Our vast experience gives us tremendous knowledge of the sector and our brokers are constantly researching information relating to the industry to ensure that we truly understand what the various sub sections of the flooring industry are and do. A prime example of this is the current construction market and how the trend in bankruptcy affects our clients exposure to losses and how we can help protect our clients business against loss. We breakdown the individual flooring business and provide advice on all insurance solutions. That may often mean questioning some of the previous advice given by any competition. We feel very, very confident in doing so because of our 20+ years advising the flooring industry on all aspects of insurance and our intimate knowledge of the sector”.  

Ian’s philosophy is service, service, service and a promise to pay if something goes wrong. If a client calls or emails for something to be done, it is done without delay. He says, “We drop everything and tend to what the client needs. I’ve always thought that when the client makes a request, it is something on their ‘to do list’ and the quicker we can help the quicker they can get on with their business. Delayed or unattended requests only frustrate our client, so we don’t let that happen.” Ian’s team keep their clients in the loop as to how things are progressing, completely transparent about any complexities or issues that affect them.
